The use of compulsive smartphones is only one type of technology addiction. However, other techniques are likely to be of extreme use, such as social media and gaming, are often accessed through mobile devices. Smartphones lend themselves to excessive use, because unlike a desktop or laptop, they can easily be taken anywhere by the user. As a result, the device is enhancing the user's primary computing device. Data plans and almost universal Wi-Fi connectivity make it possible almost anywhere.

Although the addiction of the phone has not yet been classified as psychological disorder, but experts have identified problematic patterns and behaviors. One of the most telling features is the fear of losing access to the phone or connectivity. This concern is so widespread that it has been named: Nomophobia, a portmanteau that stands for Mobile Phone Phobia. The telltale signs of phone addiction include occasionally or occasionally shutting down the device and sleeping with the device nearby, and turned on with sound-based notifications.

In a study conducted by the International Center for Media and Public Agenda (ICMPA) at the University of Maryland, the researchers removed user access to social media for 24 hours. Participants described their reactions as words that are very specific to the addiction: very anxious, extremely antsy, miserable, jittery, crazy.
