Data Transfer Project (DTP)

Data Transfer Project (DTP) is an open source initiative for facilitating the transfer of data between various online platforms of providers like Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Twitter. The project wants to reduce download and transfer of potentially large versions of individual content on any other social media platform of user choice.

DTP was developed to respect the rights, likes, privacy and security of users to ease the data transfer process and reduce the requirements, which can make it difficult for some users to transfer their data.

Avoid possible problematic steps to download and re-upload individual content included in migrating between DTP platforms. Through the API, DTP transfers content between services without the need of an intermediate step where the data should be downloaded, stored and re-uploaded. The material is converted by a platform-specific adapter to convert data into a common format before moving to the new platform's API. The process of avoiding user management of data simplifies the process and the user does not have to worry about space, possibly facing many drives of data, corruption of the data or the difficulties of the organization.

Google Data Liberation Front started DTP in 2017 and introduced it as a service in July 2018. This project comes as a development of Google's downloadable data (also known as Takeout), which Google has enabled to download machine-readable copy individually. Data from more than 50 different services.
