Easter Egg

Easter egg is an unexpected surprise - an unknowable process or unauthorized feature that is playful in nature or gives credit to the software developer or chip designer. Like their name, Easter eggs are quite elusive and can be hard to find.

Here is a very simple example of Easter egg.
  1.  Go to Google.com
  2. Type a barrel roll in the search bar.
Other popular Google Easter eggs include:
  • Type solitaire in the search bar & play the game.
  • Type tic tac toe in the search bar and play the game.
  • Write anagram in the search bar and see "Did you mean" suggestions. (Anagram is a phrase or word that is formed by rearranging the letters)
  • To travel back in time, type Google in 1998 in the search box.
Microchip art is another type of Easter egg. In the example on the left side, the Chip Designer represented a buffalo and four dots with "buffalo chips" in the design. (A buffalo chip that has been dried, so it can be used for fuel.)

Although intended to harm Easter Egg, any unwanted source code can cause security risks. For this reason, many software companies have refused to add Easter eggs to the programmer or require Easter eggs through normal source code testing.
