Apple iOS is a mobile operating system that runs on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Apple is based on Mac OS X operating system for iOS desktop and laptop computers. The iOS Developer Kit provides tools that allow the development of iOS apps.

Designed for use with Apple's multitouch device, mobile OS supports input via direct manipulation. The system responds to  user gestures, such as tapping, pinching, and swiping.

  • Cross-platform communication between Apple devices through AirDrop; And
  • Apple Pay, which stores users' credit card data and allows them to pay for goods and services directly with the iOS device.

Apple iOS version history

Apple IOS was originally known as the iPhone OS In June 2010, the company released three versions of the mobile OS by that name before the debit of iOS 4 in June 2010. On October 12, 2011, Apple released iOS 5, in which the number of applications available exceeds 500,000. This iOS version includes notification center, a camera app, Siri and more.

Unveiled on June 11, 2012, iOS 6 included Maps apps and passbook ticket storage and loyalty program apps.

Released September 18, 2013, iOS 7 had a fully-designed user interface. In September 2014, iOS 8 introduced continuity, a cross-platform system that allows users of many Apple devices to take on one where they moved away from the other. Other new features include photo apps and apple music.

Apple iOS 9 and iOS 10 - were released on September 16, 2015, respectively, and on September 13, 2016 - Re-updated notification sections such as upgrades, improved iMessage capabilities, and integration with third-party applications.

Apple iOS market share

As of November 2016, the share of the Apple iOS market worldwide was 12.5%, according to IDC, Google is the second most popular mobile OS after Android.
